Even With Programs in Place, Many Families Struggle to Find Care
As part of our Spring Bloom Together Campaign, we’re taking a closer look at what access to child care really means and why it remains out of reach for so many families.
There’s a common misconception that child care assistance is readily available to families who need it…The reality is more complicated.
Even with programs like Working Connections Child Care and Early Head Start
- Families face long waitlists before they can access care
- Not all providers accept subsidies or some providers may have limited spots for children with subsidies
- The child care workforce is stretched thin; with some providers working far beyond traditional work hours
- Families often need additional support beyond care, like food, diapers, and housing stability
For Zoe, access wasn’t automatic, it required navigation, advocacy, and someone to walk alongside her.
“They helped me apply for everything,” she shared. “I wouldn’t have known where to start.”
With BrightSpark’s support, Zoe didn’t just find care, she found a system that worked with her.
She was connected to:
- Subsidy programs that made child care financially possible
- Early Head Start supports that provide wraparound services
- A provider she trusts deeply; someone who shares her values and communicates regularly

This work helps families navigate complex systems, access essential goods, and avoid falling through the cracks while waiting for care. Without it, many would still be waiting.
