The Transformative Power of Reliable Child Care: Zoe’s Story

Zoe Meyers is a college student and a dedicated mother to her three-year-old son, Mari. When unexpected changes in her family situation required her to navigate parenthood on her own, Zoe leaned into her determination to create stability and opportunity for herself and her son.

Guided by a trusted family member, Zoe connected with BrightSpark, where she was immediately introduced to programs and resources designed to support parents as they build strong foundations for their families. There, Zoe found support that helped her to move forward and continue shaping a bright future for herself and Mari.

“Originally, I was really nervous. I had never gone through all of those waters,” Zoe shared. “Once I got in touch with BrightSpark, they helped me get good stamps. They helped me with gas cards. They supplied me with diapers and formula. They even helped me get to know my provider.”

With BrightSpark’s assistance, Zoe found and applied for Working Connections Child Care (WCCC) – a statewide subsidy program for low-income families – and the Early Head Start (EHS) program. While WCCC covers the cost of child care, EHS provides wraparound support for families including health screenings, basic needs like food and diapers, and help securing long-term, sustainable housing.

Mari entered the program at six months old and is now three years old. Throughout this time, he has been in the care of a provider Zoe trusts and has a close relationship with.

“Literally, I would not be anywhere if it wasn’t for his provider. They have become our second home and our second family. I would drive a hundred miles just to make sure that he keeps going there because he knows them, he loves them, and he’s comfortable with them,” Zoe said.

“They have the same values that I do at home and they care about what’s happening in the world right now. They are very communicative, and that can be hard to find.”

Zoe also feels confident that Mari will be ready for school. “I think EHS is preparing him perfectly for school. I was a little concerned because I’m a working parent and so I don’t see everything. But the teachers at his daycare are really communicative and tell me what we need to work on, so I feel like he’s so prepared. I think he’s ready and will love it, too.”

Through WCCC and EHS, Zoe’s full cost of child care is covered. Without this financial stressor, Zoe is able to pursue her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Green River College as well as apply for jobs to continue advancing her career.

After her experience, Zoe shared that she recommends all her friends get in touch with BrightSpark to see if there is a program or service that can benefit their families. “I always suggest BrightSpark, even to my friends who aren’t in the same position as me,” Zoe explained. “Even if you can’t qualify for a subsidy, there’s a program out there that will help you.

“When you’re trying to do it all by yourself, there are so many hurdles you have to jump over and through,” Zoe said. “So it was very helpful, especially when I really needed it.”
