Leaves are falling, days are getting shorter, and Fall is in full swing! That means the November election is just around the corner. On Tuesday, November 3, eligible voters will have the opportunity to make their voices heard about the issues and candidates that matter to them the most.
Despite the importance of voting, only 34% of eligible voters in Washington actually cast their ballots during midterm elections like this one. This year, let’s make that percentage higher and ensure that those who can vote do so!
“Think of a time when you did something with many other people that you couldn’t have done on your own – like completing a large project, moving residences, or putting together a big celebration. Now imagine doing that for the direction of our government, laws, and what they do for our communities. That is voting,” explained Sara Betnel, Advocacy & Mobilization Manager.
Below, you will find information on registering to vote and casting your ballot to ensure your voice is heard!
Registering to Vote
Are you registered to vote? If not, here’s how you can make it happen!
If you’re not sure if you’re registered or not, you can easily check on the VoteWA voter registration and ballot management portal. Simply fill in your first name, last name, and date of birth. If you are registered, you will be directed to a page confirming your account.
If you are not registered, you can register to vote online using the VoteWA online registration system. This page also includes information on how to register by mail or in-person.
Remember: You can register in-person until 8 p.m. on Election Day at your local County Elections office. You will need your driver’s license, state ID card, or the last 4 digits of your Social Security number.
Submitting Your Ballot
Now that you’re registered to vote, what’s next? Actually casting your ballot!
In Washington State, there are three primary ways to vote: by mail, in person, and by dropping off your ballot. Check them out below!
Voting by Mail
If you are registered to vote, your ballot will be mailed out to the address on your voter registration on Wednesday, October 14. To vote by mail, simply fill out your ballot when it comes in the mail and place it in the provided return envelope. No postage needed! To ensure your ballot makes it in on time, USPS suggests mailing it at least one week before Election Day.
Voting In-Person or via Ballot Drop-Off
Need help finding where to vote in-person or drop off your ballot? Once you’re registered to vote, go to VoteWA.gov and navigate to the top right tab labeled “Your Ballot & Voting Materials.” Then, on the right-side menu, select “Drop Box & Voting Center Locations.” This will provide you with a list of every place you can go to vote in-person or drop off your ballot! Make sure to do so by 8 PM on Election Day for your vote to count!
Making Informed Decisions
When voting, it’s important to be familiar with the candidates and initiatives that will be on your ballot. This way, you can make informed decisions about how you cast your vote. Make sure to carve out time to review your voter guide, which includes detailed information about each candidate and initiative on your ballot.
