Join Our Board

1 term is 3 years, members can serve up to 3 terms. We hope members will serve more than one term. 

We host 6 board meetings a year – 4 are virtual and 2 are in-person.

• Board Meeting Attendance: We ask that board members miss no more than one meeting a year.
• Committees: Board members must sit on at least one Committee. Committees typically meet once/month, at most
• Fundraising: Financial stewardship is a significant part of a board member’s role and that includes fundraising. Involvement in fundraising can look different for each board member and ranges from bringing in new funders and sponsors to promoting the organization across your social and professional networks and making a financial donation.
• Event Recruitment & Attendance: Events are the greatest point of entry for new BrightSpark supporters. We ask that our board members attend our major events to be ambassadors and recruit attendees to connect the community to our work.

• Executive Committee: Comprised of elected officers of the Board (and past Board Chair) and all standing committee chairs; responsible for emergency decision making as needed between regular Board meetings.
• Finance Committee: Leads process for establishing annual budget priorities; reviews annual audit; monitors policies on investment. Meets 6-8 times a year. No significant financial management experience is needed.
• Strategic Planning Committee: Oversees tracking of and progress towards overall long-term strategies; serves as a liaison between Board and staff to identify gaps in tools/resources and decide when to revisit strategy screens and “Big Question” goals. Meets as needed once plan is established and monthly during planning phase (6 months).
• External Affairs Committee: this committee encompasses Fund Development, Marketing & Communications, and Policy & Advocacy. Typically meets every other month, approximately 6 times/year.
  • Fund Development: Monitoring process for establishing annual and long- range fundraising plans and strategies; champions board engagement in fundraising activity; advises on annual event audience development and messaging via a sub-committee. Meets quarterly.
  • Advocacy & Policy: Works with the BrightSpark Advocacy Manager and EO to oversee the Board’s advocacy engagement and education so that Board members can be active supporters of legislation that impacts and furthers the organization’s mission.
